Technique Sunday with Faux Iris Folding

At today’s class we are working on a technique called “Faux Iris Folding”!

You might ask, “why faux”. Well you see, the original technique requires you to cut strips of Designer Papers that are 1/2 inch wide and then you fold them in half to make skinny strips. You also would follow a pattern to lay out and glue down those strips.

Well, you know me – I am all about making things a little easier. So my approach is in fact that!

Here is card #1:

To cut out the star towards the center of the main layer, I used the “Movers & Shapers” die along with the the magnetic star insert from the “Punch Windows” set.

When you see instructions or videos about this technique online you might notice how neatly people cut off the extra DSP. BUT I am for speed and really don’t mind the mess, so I tear the ends of by hand. I am going to show you the backview of it now:

See! But once the card is assembled, nobody will know that :-) This view will also give you and idea on how to apply the strips. Basically you just put down adhesive around the opening. Then the first color of DSP was placed over one part of opening then cut/torn off. Placed over next part, cut off and so on until back at start. Then more adhesive was applied and the 2nd color was used in the same manner. More adhesive again, and then the 3rd color was used. More adhesive was added again and the whole process starts over until the whole opening is covered.

Colors used: Pacific Point,  Confetti White CS, DSP Pattern Stack in the Brights collection.

And here is card number 2:

On this one we’ve used the Oranment Punch and the Simply Scrappin' Kit, Christmas Cheer for the DSP strips. Colors used: Cherry Cobbler, Marina Mist, Always Artichoke, Confetti White, Brushed Silver.

Also pay attention to the “flat oval”. Even though I embossed the Confetti White CS with the “Petals-a-Plenty” Embossing Folder, the center is not textured and I was able to stamp in that area! This is something the Patty Bennett discovered last year I think and I wanted to try it ever since. I finally did and boy do I love this look!

All you need is a thin, thin wood frame from the craft store with “M” in the name and then I am telling you how to layer it all on the Multipurpose Platform… you may have to try yours and use more ore less shims.

Multipurpose Platform, use Tab 1 with cardboard shim and 2 pieces of CS under it

Pretty cool!
